What is DEF?

Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) is a solution of 32.5% high-purity synthetic urea and 67.5% deionized water. Diesel engines with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) spray it into the exhaust, where it helps turn nitrogen oxides (NOx) into nitrogen and water. It goes in its own tank, never in the fuel tank.

EPA emission standards that took effect for heavy-duty diesel engines in 2010 pushed most manufacturers to SCR, so most diesel trucks and much newer diesel equipment now need DEF. Keep the DEF tank topped off: it’s the one with the blue cap, usually next to the fuel tank on highway trucks.

How much does DEF weigh?

DEF weighs about 9.1 pounds per gallon, a little more than water.

Is DEF made of urine?

No. DEF is made with synthetic urea produced in chemical plants, mixed with deionized water. Urea is named after urine, where it was first identified, but there is no urine in DEF.

How to store DEF

Store it between 12°F and 86°F, the range ISO 22241 suggests, ideally below 77°F and out of direct sunlight.
DEF starts to freeze at 12°F (-11°C). Frozen DEF can be thawed and used.
Keep containers sealed so the fluid doesn’t evaporate or pick up contamination.
Store and dispense it only with containers, pumps and hoses made for DEF.
