Off-road vs. on-road diesel
| Off-road diesel | On-road diesel | |
|---|---|---|
| Color | Dyed red | Clear |
| The fuel | Ultra-low-sulfur diesel | Ultra-low-sulfur diesel |
| Road tax | Not taxed for highway use | Taxed by the gallon to pay for road upkeep |
| Use it in | Heavy equipment, generators, farm machinery and other off-road uses | Trucks and any vehicle you drive on public roads |
Dyed diesel is for off-road use only. Don’t run it in a vehicle you drive on public roads. For trucks and road vehicles, use on-road diesel, which we also deliver.
Off-road and on-road diesel react to cold the same way. Before winter, read when diesel gels and how to prevent it.
Emergency diesel delivery
When storms, outages or emergencies hit, generators and equipment can't wait. As an essential business, we keep delivering through severe weather and states of emergency, from 50 gallons to more than 5,000, straight to your tanks, generators and equipment. Emergency delivery covers Chester County and Delaware County in Pennsylvania and New Castle County in Delaware. Call about options in Salem, Gloucester and Camden counties, NJ.

Off-road diesel FAQs
Off-road diesel, also called red or dyed diesel, is ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel with a red dye added. The dye marks it for off-road use only, because it isn’t taxed for highway use the way clear on-road diesel is.
The red dye marks fuel that hasn’t been taxed for highway use. Federal rules require untaxed diesel to carry a red dye (Solvent Red 164), so inspectors can spot it in a vehicle’s tank. Running dyed diesel in a vehicle on public roads can bring IRS penalties, so use clear on-road diesel for anything that drives on the street.
Not in a vehicle you drive on public roads. Dyed diesel is for off-road equipment, generators and other non-highway uses. For trucks and road vehicles, use on-road (clear) diesel, which we also deliver.
Anyone can. Because it’s mostly used by businesses with heavy equipment, generators and farm machinery, it’s usually sold in bulk and delivered to tanks or straight into equipment.
